Heather, Mike & Maddie — My Friends

I first met Heather at BlogHer ‘08, during the Macy’s party.

Casey said, “This is Heather from ‘The Spohrs Are Multiplying. If you aren’t reading her, YOU SHOULD.’

Well, okay then!

I interacted with Heather intermittently on Twitter after BlogHer and knew that she was my kind of girl. The Cracker kind.

When we met at Blissdom, it was clear that we would be friends.

We both had preemies, we both liked to drink and cuss, we both just don’t give a fuck — a perfect union!

Our relationship was solidified on the plane ride home from Blissdom. I had to fly through LAX and Heather saved me a seat on the plane since I was the crackah-ass-crackah that got on the plane damn near close to LAST.

Heather and I talked BlogHer ‘09 and we cried — YES, we CRIED — about our darling preemie babies. On the gottdamn plane. This is when we bonded. For life.

Three weeks ago, Titi and I went down to Los Angeles to stay with the Spohrs for the 5 Minutes for Mom Ultimate Blog Party In Real Life (featuring Chris Mann) and we got to meet the illuminating spirit that was Maddie. (THREE FUCKING WEEKS AGO, PEOPLE. I was holding and loving and cuddling that little girl.)

Wrapped up in Mike’s arms when we walked through the door, Maddie and her infectious smile was the welcome mat for the Spohr household.

Titi and Maddie took to each other right away; acting almost like brother and sister.

When it was time for us to pack up and leave, my son didn’t want to go. Neither did I. Some people you just *connect* with. Some people are your Crackers. The Spohrs are my Crackers.

*******

Every time I open the computer, I am bombarded with purple and the sweet face of Miss Maddie Moo. Titi sees his friend and talks about her.
I don’t know if it’s a sick compulsion or what, but I asked him, “Do you want to hang out with Mama H and Maddie again?” Titi said, “YEAH.”

“Night night?” he asked.

I said, “you want to spend the night at Mama H’s house again?”

“YEAH!!”

I did not have the heart to say a damn thing.

*******

I am completely heartbroken and have been at a loss for words about this devastating tragedy. Tonight, I sat down to write because so many others have written such unbelievable tributes. I can do at least this much.

Tomorrow I will stand next to Heather and Mike, wishing that instead we were at their home, standing and playing with their dear daughter, Madeline, and not in a Church at Forest Lawn.

Tomorrow I will be strong for my friends. And even though I WILL cry, I will remain strong enough to hold their hands, and offer my shoulder, because I am the one with my precious preemie still alive. And they are not. And it crushes me. The weight of it all.

Our hopes and dreams and plans for our children to grow up as friends.

Please join me tomorrow at 2:30pm Pacific time for a wonderful celebration of Madeline Alice Spohr’s LIFE. Maddie deserves a celebration. Maddie would want us to smile when thinking of her.

I’ll be the one in the purple shirt.

Tell Me How This Happens

Last night Warrior (that’s the husband if ya don’t know) made us go to bed early. By early I mean 10:30pm, or 22:30 for you international peeps. I slept straight through to 6:45 this morning. WAY better than 5:40, for sure. I woke up exhausted.

Two nights ago, we stayed up until almost midnight, and woke up at 6:15am. I was less tired yesterday morning. How does that work? I don’t get it. Catching up on sleep?

I don’t know. All I know is that I needed extra coffee this morning. And I’m still not thinking straight.

So, to tear a page from Playgroupie’s book, I give you some linky love.

My girl (well really she’s Stefania’s girl, I am just blessed to have met and hung with her on occasion) Bad Kitty has a new and totally awesome style venture called What a Bargain! It is awesometastic and a bit snarky, and completely loverly.

People are talking about the BlogHer New York Times article. And talking. Interesting discussions, and unfortunately a lot of asshatery from some (jealous?) men (who I don’t want to link to (don’t want them on my blog), but you can find it through the previous links).
Update: PBS is talking BlogHer, too! Thanks for the tip from Mr. Lady, who is featured in the article! Yay!

Backpacking Dad is going around with a heavy flyswatter and delivering Blogging Justice.

Yes, I have more to say about BlogHer, but we all needed a break, right? I’ll hopefully get to it tomorrow soon. Next installment will be less about the pictures and more about the LURVE that was felt. Seriously folks, it was there. I guess some people didn’t feel it, though, tis a shame.

The Adventures of Carl, Roaming Flyswatter (WHAT? He’s not a real person??)

Previously: We took a long-ass bus ride, partied with Guy Kawasaki, then made it back to the hotel.

Carl took a nap while we were at the Alltop Party. But he’s ready to party!

Carl owns the Newbie Party, and immediately says hi to…

Then we took Carl downstairs to the People’s Party…

We made quite the scene with Carl. Some people were grossed out, some people were all about it, but everyone was a good sport. Thanks to all that participated!

Carl is off to Washington, DC, next to see the White House! Go Carl!

**And the winner of the Picnik Premium account is… LATTE MOMMY!! Congrats girl.**

The Alltop/Kirtsy Party

UPDATED: Now with more words!! And a GIVEAWAY!! See below.

My precious Dawn, with MGM and HBM in the background

Liz

Laid-Off Dad

Kristen

Christine

Casey

So first Christine, Dawn and I get on a bus to go to Guy Kawasaki’s house and we are surrounded by super famous mommy (and one daddy) bloggers. I impressed Dawn and Christine by “knowing” Liz, Kristen and Andrea and getting hugs from them and stuff. Yes, I am teh awesome. (HA!)

Then we take a long-ass bus ride thirty miles away, because the bus driver totally doesn’t know where he’s going, even though I was all, we’re not headed in the right direction!! So yeah, it took us an hour and twenty minutes to go thirty miles. Yeah, we’re special like that.

We finally arrive and the woman who I will find out two days later is White Trash Mom and her cohort Slacker Mom are acting all Cracker-ish and super cute, and we like, totally love them.

We mix and mingle and ogle the bigs-ups and talk to BOSSY and Greeblemonkey, and best of all MRS. FLINGER!! because she promised to lick us, and she ditched us and took the previous bus when she was supposed to come with us so we had to give her shit for that. (OMG, run-on much?) I can’t remember the rest. And it wasn’t the wine. I swear.

Then I ran into Eve, and was all, “ZOMG!! WTF are you doing here??” Cuz I like, totally knew her in a previous life.

It was getting towards eight and we wanted to make sure we headed back to thirty miles from Guy’s house (he twitpic’d me! woot!) so that we could make the newbie and People’s Parties. So we grabbed our swag bags (each bag was different, so I didn’t get all of that stuff, just most of it) and hightailed it back to the bus. Luckily this time it only took slightly more than thirty minutes to reach our destination.

That concludes the first four hours of BlogHer08.
Next up: CARL!! Newbie party & People’s Party.

GIVEAWAY!!! I have ONE picnik premium account to give away. Just leave a comment on this post by midnight PST Thursday and I will pick a winner at random. You must NOT have attended BlogHer to win. Cheers!
